Nowadays, most of our food has been exposed to various chemicals in varying degrees. These chemicals range from fertilisers and preservatives to ripening gases. These chemicals in the long run affect our health adversely. The problem then is how can we get access to fresh food that is free from most of these chemicals? The answer to this is through the instrumentality of farmers markets.
Farmers markets are places where farmers directly sell their fresh farm produce to the customers. Food that has been recently harvested and don’t have to be preserved or forced to ripeness are those sold at farmers markets. For better understanding, a farmers market would be overviewed. Also, advantages and disadvantages of farmers markets would also be highlighted.
In order to carry out an overview of a farmers market, our searchlight will be beamed on the state of Kansas. The state of Kansas as at 2014 had 130 farmers markets. It would be an impossible task to discuss on all the 130 of them. Thus, I would concentrate on just one: The Kansas City farmers market.
Kansas City Farmers Market
The Kansas City farmers market, unlike some other farmers market is open all year round. The market is usually open every Saturday and Sunday from 7.00am to 3.00 pm. The market has over 140 vendors at its stands. Some of the vendors include Birds Botanical , Bread of Life Bakery , Bryson Farms Fresh Produce ,Danjo Farms , Huns Garden and so on.
Although the market is open all year round, the produce sold at the market vary according to the season. For example apples are available from June to November; onions are available from April to November while asparagus is available from March to June.
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Farmers Markets
Farmers markets like every other entity on the face of the earth have two sides; its pros and cons. These shall be expatiated upon.
An advantage of farmers market is that it helps connect the community. There is usually an increased feeling of communalism which is promoted at the farmers market. You get to meet local folk and relate better with them. This is better than the official nature of a grocery store.
Another advantage is that one is able to get free advice on how to cook/store the food. A lot of the farmer/vendors are very good cooks. Thus, they would be ready to give advice on how to cook the meal. They could also give advice on how the food is to be preserved. This compared to the grocery store cashier who might not be experienced in cooking and storing the food being sold, as his job is just to sell the food items.
There are also disadvantages to selling foods at farmers markets. One of the disadvantages is that the market is open only at particular period of time. Thus, buyers and seller would have to wait for the period at which the market would be open in order to get food products.
Another disadvantage is the seasonal nature of the produce. Particular foods will only be available in its season. Thus, one can’t get access to the food he wants except it is its season.
In conclusion, the preceding has expatiated on Kansas farmers markets with focus on the Kansas City farmers market. Also, some advantages and disadvantages of farmers markets have been discussed.
